Missouri braces for winter storm

With the roads covered and more snow on its way, not everyone is staying home Friday night including one couple on their way to Kansas City.

“We’re slowing down on all the bridgeways and things like that. We’re from Fort Madison, Iowa and headed to Kansas City,” said Susan Garrels.

Meanwhile, MoDOT said they will have crews out all night treating the roads.

“It’ll probably get worse as it goes on. I’d stay home if I didn’t have to be out on the roads. It’s not about to get any higher,” aforesaid MoDOT Plow teamster John Barnett.

MoDOT said if you have to go out on the roadways use caution. They ask that you give their crews some space to work.

“Don’t get in a hurry,” said Barnett. “That seems to be the bigger issue. People want to pass somebody else and the driving lane is better. The passing lane is a little worse and that’s where they get in trouble. They hit the slick spots in the passing lane and that’s when they go off the road a lot of times.”

Drivers that were out in the weather Friday said they’re taking it extra slowly.

“We just know it’s going to be slow. I’m expecting we’ll be doing good if we get to the hotel at about 1 o’clock in the morning. If we have to drive 30 miles per hour, we gotta drive 30 miles per hour. And if it gets too bad, we’ll find someplace else to stay,” said driver John Garrels.

MoDOT will continue to spread salt and plow the roads all night as the snow comes down. They’re expected to be out all weekend if necessary.
